A half dozen companies operate parasailing excursions at Lake Tahoe. Harnessed to a parasail, most fliers take off from the stern of a specially designed boat and are towed for 10 to 20 minutes or so around the lake. Flights are generally at around 400 feet above the surface, though some companies offer optional higher trips up to 1,200 feet (at additonal cost). Most boats can take four to six passengers, who alternate on the parasial. Age restrictions vary, though children as young as four have been accepted as long as they are accompanied by an adult. Since the upper weight limit is around 280 pounds, tandem flying can combine two adults or and adult and a child. No previous experience is necessary, as the flight is controlled by the captain of the boat. Landings usually are made on the boat but can take place on the water and, in some cases, on the beach. Prices range from $35 for low-altitude rides, and it's possible to find discounts for early morning excursions. In the summer, companies will operate until sunset as long as there is business and as long as winds do not exceed 20 knots.
